In 2018, DA Smith* conducted the first stress measurements at Nevada Copper's Pumpkin Hollow underground copper mine located in Yerington, Nevada, shortly after completion of the primary production shaft. A total of seven successful 3D in situ stress measurements were conducted from the 1900 Level using CSIRO HI Cell gages. The mineralized ore was especially hot and stiff, with Young’s moduli exceeding 160 GPa in some locations. Drilling equipment was slung and lowered down the shaft before installation of the permanent shaft cage. Results were ultimately applied to mine design.
