In 2023-24, DA Smith completed a surface drilling program near Silverton, Colorado, for CDM Smith as part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Bonita Peak Mining District Superfund Site project. Multiple angled and vertical holes were drilled to depths reaching 900 feet using Devico directional core drilling tooling to target underground workings of the historic Sunnyside gold mine. At depths of several hundred feet, hole surveys confirmed target accuracies better than 5 feet. Holes were cored N and H using low-impact, track-mounted VersaDrill KmN1.4sm and Boart Longyear LF-90D diamond core drills. Select holes were reamed to a final diameter of 5.5 inches. Holes were completed as 3-inch or 4-inch monitoring wells. At the start of each drilling season, mobilization to the high-alpine mountain site, located at an elevation of 12,200 feet, required clearing deep snow and tramming heavy equipment with a dozer. Logistical planning played a key role in the success of the remote-site drilling program.
