In 2022, DA Smith drilled 12 air rotary exploration holes totaling more than 4,100 feet for American Gypsum at the Eagle Mine in Gypsum, Colorado. Drilling was conducted ahead of a planned future layback of the Eagle pit. Holes were drilled on highwall benches and in roadless areas beyond the active pit. Foam and various additives were used to control borehole erosion from gypsum dissolution. Drilling rates exceeded 400 feet per day. The project was completed successfully and on budget.
